Who Has to Change for You to Be OK? 👀

Notes From a Relationship Coach
(Big ideas in a small email)

“If you can’t regulate your own emotional temperature, you’ll regulate everyone around you to keep yourself comfortable.”

–David Schnarch, Intimacy & Desire

Claaassic codependency. 👌🏼

But let me be quick to say codependency is not a moral failure, “bad habit,” or character defect. It’s how we learn to survive not feeling safe, seen, soothed, or secure; when our needs are not being met; in the face of developmental trauma or relational ambivalence.

So I’m not here to victim-shame anyone. But…

Some people are ok no matter what, others are not ok no matter what, and there’s a whole spectrum in between. And I think it’s important for you to know where you currently fall on that scale. No shame. Just self-awareness.

How many specific things do you need specific people to do for you to feel ok? (good to know the difference between needs and demands). The greater that number, the more stress, unhappiness, resentment, and exhaustion you are likely to feel (which can render you quite unpalatable, tbh).

I’m certainly not suggesting you should not need anything from anyone. Controlling over-dependency and compulsive self-reliance are two sides of the same wound. But there are such things as appropriate self-interest and healthy interdependence.

The goal is not “stop being codependent.” The goal is to understand the injury or developmental arrest that codependency became the better-than-nothing solution for. And once you heal THAT thing, the emotional terrorism of codependency loses its grip.

Notes From a Relationship Coach(Big ideas in a small email) “Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement.” –James Clear, Atomic Habits This is my 100th N.F.A.R.C. y’all. Not gonna lie, it feels kinda special. I started working at 10 years old. Had two jobs by 9th grade. Bought a car at 15. Paid for 11 years of college, and when I still couldn’t make a living wage after 12 years teaching high school math and physics, I moved to a foreign country, learned a second language, built...

Notes From a Relationship Coach(Big ideas in a small email) “Love liberates. It doesn’t bind.” –Maya Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings Love requires enough safety and freedom for two entire humans to live, grow, explore, frolic, fall down, get up, and still feel lovable. There must be space for two completely different sets of perspectives, feelings, struggles, experiences, and preferences. A relationship is not a one-seater that you need to cram yourselves into via sacrifice,...

Notes From a Relationship Coach(Big ideas in a small email) “Gamble everything for love if you are a true human being. If not, leave this gathering. Half-heartedness does not reach into majesty.” –Rumi, The Essential Rumi When you buy a puppy or a kitten, you know with almost absolute certainty that one day you’ll watch it die and IT WILL CRUSH YOU. But people do it anyway. Because love is worth it. All relationships are more or less this type of gamble. You can attempt to mitigate risk by...
